A way of managing a joint account

Sorry, Ian, but you're wrong here; you can absolutely reconcile the credit
card account set up this way.

When you select the parent placeholder credit card account to reconcile
there is a checkbox to "include subaccounts" -- and if you check that it
will include the subaccounts (and the transactions therein) in the set to
be reconciled.  So yes, you can reconcile it when set up this way.
