That seems odd -- I am certain Kubuntu 14.10 "Utopic" should offer you
version 2.6.3. Did you install GnuCash from another source? (GetDeb, for
example.) You can use the "apt-cache policy gnucash" command in a terminal
to see where yours came from and whether there's an update available in
your active package sources.

The symptom you describe has affected folks who have upgraded their systems
and/or GnuCash (including retaining your home directory when reinstalling
the system or GnuCash). There happens to be a Guile bug that causes
crashes, and maybe it's affecting you. You might try the workaround
https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=764821

You only have to delete the directory
    ~/.cache/guile/ccache/
and try to reopen GnuCash. (Note if you are new to linux the tilde slash
"~/" means your home directory, and the dot in front of the ".cache" means
the directory is normally "hidden" from ordinary file listings.)

After deleting it, Guile will rebuild the items in the cache directory. You
only need to do this once after an upgrade.

If you have upgraded to GnuCash version 2.6.3 or 2.6.4 and deleting the
cache direcgtory doesn't help, open a terminal window and launch GnuCash
from there

   $ gnucash

and watch for the error messages that appear as the program fails to
open. Please
report back to the list (not to me!) with the results.
