A follow up: this problem was further discussed on irc. The files
recovered from the faulty hard drive appear to be corrupt. This can be
either because the tool used (Recuva) didn't work correctly or because
the faulty hard drive was damaged beyond recovery. The original poster
is currently trying other recovery tools.
