2.6 is on ubuntu!

Are you using the beta version of Ubuntu Trusty (which will be Ubuntu
14.04 when it is released in April)?  I see 2.6 there but I would not
expect it to be provided in 13.10 or earlier as new major versions are
not normally made available in current Ubuntu releases.

If you are not using Trusty could you run

apt-cache policy gnucash

in a terminal and post the result?
