Importing QIFs

So, I'm attempting to import QIFs from my bank and in several cases I've
already entered the transacting in the GC register for the checking
account. I get to the end of the process, and it pops up a dialog for
some possible matches, but the list is severely lacking in the number of
transactions that it should have found that match those already in the
register. Moreover, when I check the box indicating that an imported
transaction does indeed match an existing one, it seems to leave the
transaction unreconciled.

I end up with a rather large collection of duplicate transactions that I
have to sort out and I haven't found a way to reconcile the matched
transactions that it does find.

Understand that I'm new to gnucash and could easily be doing something
wrong. Can anyone give me some clues as to how to improve the
possibilities of matching the transactions from the bank and what's in
GC? The worst example was three cases where it couldn't match checks
that were entered with numbers and amounts that matched between the QIF
and the register - the only difference was the transaction date.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.
