This is the best way to do it.
Your only other option (if you are using 2.6) would be to create a split
transaction and then apply each split as a payment.

The best way to handle this is to set up your invoice report as you like
it and then keep it open (don't close the report). Then when you want
to print a new invoice you edit the report options and choose the new
invoice.
Another option which *may* work is to save it as a saved report and
there *may* be a way to specify that as the default invoice print
report. But I'm not sure that works.
