Unfortunately it looks like GnuCash 2.6.1 is what will be packaged in
Ubuntu 14.04 LTS (Long Term Support) release. See
http://wiki.gnucash.org/wiki/Ubuntu
Due to the way Ubuntu packages GnuCash (via a fixed version imported from
Debian on a "freeze" date before the final release, which for 14.04 was
February 6th), it never gets updated in the Ubuntu standard repositories.
(Actually if there were a serious security issue a patch would get pushed
through.) Someone can "Backport" later versions of GnuCash to any supported
version of Uubntu, which would be great if it happens, but users would
still have to know how to activate the repository to get it. This is
essentially what happens with GetDeb.
The latest version available via Getdeb for Ubuntu 12.04 LTS is GnuCash
2.4.13.
FORTUNATELY, since GnuCash 2.6.2 is now available via Getdeb for Ubuntu
13.10, it almost certainly will be packaged for Ubuntu 14.04 LTS when the
LTS release comes out next month.
The wiki link above describes all that gibberish in a bit more detail if
you need it.
