*THIS* is your problem.  There is no "tarball" from github!  You need to
 either:

1) Pull the *official* tarball from www.gnucash.org / SourceForge, or
2) GIT Clone from Github.

Using Github's "tarball" is both wrong and broken for GnuCash.  Don't do
that.
