Can't delete invoice entry

I posted and paid an invoice and then discovered that it had been paid twice.
So I unposted it and ended up with a complete mess. I renamed the invoice to
try to get rid of it and start again, but it is still being recorded as a
payment in the Accounts receivable (which I can't delete).
What can I do?
