2.6.4 crashing on Ubuntu 14.04?

Where did you get version 2.6.4 from?

I have the getdeb repository (see http://www.getdeb.net/welcome/ for
details) enabled because the official Ubuntu repositories haven't
updated from 2.6.1, and the update there (2.6.4-1~getdeb1) appears to be
fine for what I am using it for.
