Hello, Dick.

I’m not clear what you’re asking for here, Dick. Normally, when you set up GNC you choose a simple filename - in my case “MDH” - and a directory (in my case $HOME/documents/accounts).

GNC will call the current file “MDH.gnucash”, and will continue to use this filename until specifically told otherwise.

During use, GNC keeps a log file (which is named after the file in use with the addition of a date-and-time-stamp (in “.YYYYMMDDMMSS" form) and “.log", and will keep backups in the same way, but with “.gnucash” appended instead of “.log”

Here’s an extract from a directory listing of my accounts directory, which will show you the pattern:

MDH.gnucash
...
MDH.gnucash.20150324145542.gnucash
MDH.gnucash.20150324145545.log
MDH.gnucash.20150324145934.gnucash
MDH.gnucash.20150324145936.log
MDH.gnucash.20150324150649.gnucash
MDH.gnucash.20150324150650.log
MDH.gnucash.20150326173916.log
MDH.gnucash.20150326174417.gnucash
MDH.gnucash.20150326174419.log
MDH.gnucash.20150326174923.gnucash
MDH.gnucash.20150326174925.log
MDH.gnucash.20150327165502.gnucash
MDH.gnucash.20150327165505.log
MDH.gnucash.20150327165933.gnucash
MDH.gnucash.20150327165936.log
MDH.gnucash.20150327171645.gnucash
MDH.gnucash.20150327171647.log
MDH.gnucash.20150327213737.log
MDH.gnucash.20150327214300.gnucash
MDH.gnucash.20150327214303.log
MDH.gnucash.20150405151741.log
MDH.gnucash.20150405152243.gnucash
MDH.gnucash.20150405152246.log

By default, when you open GNC, it will open the last “.gnucash” file you were working on, but the File menu allows you to choose any file whose name ends in “.gnucash”. This means that you can open any of the backup files, such as "2014Striping.gnucash.20150414215531.gnucash” in the example you give.

If you chose to edit this file, a further datestamp will be added to the working file’s name in creating a backup for this (backup) file, and so on.

Here are a few of my log files, created when I first installed GNC on my Mac.

MDH.gnucash.20130218095930.gnucash.20130409081929.log
MDH.gnucash.20130218095930.gnucash.20130409082236.log
MDH.gnucash.20130219092607.gnucash.20130409091754.log
MDH.gnucash.20130219092607.gnucash.20130409133200.log
MDH.gnucash.20130219102434.gnucash.20130409091640.log
MDH.gnucash.20130224161534.gnucash.20130409091527.log
MDH.gnucash.20130224165256.gnucash.20130409091406.log
MDH.gnucash.20130305175312.gnucash.20130409091249.log
MDH.gnucash.20130408125516.gnucash.20130409091125.log

Does this help you understand what’s going on?

Michael
