What are the import-map slots in accounts used for?

Hey Everyone,

Can someone tell me what the <gnc:account> level "import-map" slots are
used for?

These slots are found above the "import-map-bayes" slots, in the
<gnc:account> data.  They appear to provide a mapping between a
transaction description (text) and the account that was used to balance
the transaction with that description.

The questions are:

    Why is this being created/maintained?

    What would happen if they were removed?  

    Would it be OK to remove any of these slots that do not reference
    existing accounts?
