That is correct.

Depending on the version of GnuCash you are using there may also be some 
special transactions involved called "Lot Link" transactions.

These were intensively used from version 2.6.0 to 2.6.4. As of 2.6.5 they will 
only be used in case at least one invoice and one credit note are involved in the 
same payment transaction.
