put zeros in transactions?

I make a series of opening balance transactions (5 of them for all of 
the asset/liability/equity accounts) at the beginning of my fiscal 
year.  This also relates to payroll, as if there is no deduction for 
state income tax, as an example, I would like a zero there, indicating 
that I did that on purpose, as opposed to forgetting to enter it.

I went through preferences, but I could not find an entry.  This is 
similar to a spreadsheet when you want zeros to show or not.  Can the 
zeros be displayed in a transaction?
