GL Report Problem

Create the report again.  Then go to edit, report options, general.  Set the
dates for the report.  Click apply and you should see your data.

You need to play around more with reports and figure out what you need. 
If you really want a general ledger report, the easiest way, in my opinion,
is to open the general ledger as you did, bu then use View > Filter by > and
choose the date range of interest.  Then open Reports > Account Report.
That should do it.
