As for installing GnuCash into Linux, a good start is to just follow the
directions in the download section of the GnuCash website for the
particular flavor of Linux you are using.  As it mentions there, you may
not find the latest version (2.6.5) pre-packaged for easy installation
into your distro.  If that is the case, there may be other users on this
list that can help.  I personally have tried release 2.6.5 in the
current Debian Linux and in Cinnamon Mint.  I needed to get it from a
repo that is not set up by default, but it is easy to find.  GnuCash
works nicely in both environments, but I prefer using it on a machine
with a higher resolution monitor than I currently have.  I have very
long and deeply nested account names and I like to see 30 or more
register lines at a time.

And for the data file, just copy the current one from your previous
machine or a backup.  If you want to copy some prefs or custom reports,
check the FAQs page on the GnuCash website.
