Just so others will know the result if they search for and find this
thread in the future.

1) I exported the account structure from my existing Gnucash files.
2) Then imported the account structure in a new clean Gnucash file.
3) Downloaded Gnucash2GIF which is a Java app and runs on the Mac with
Oracle Java installed.
4) Created a copy of the .gnucash file and added a ".zip" extension so I
could "unzip" the gnuzipped .gnucash xml file.
5) Edited the GIF file with a text editor, checked and deleted the
transactions that were prior to my opening balance.
6) Imported the GIF data using the File:Import:GIF.

The part that had me stumped for a while was the fact that the xml file
was zipped. The GnuCash2GIF application wouldn't allow opening the
.gnucash file.

Cheers!
B.
