Problems Running gnuCash in Mint 17.2

Hi Brad,
So you are running GC 2.6.1 on Mint 17.2? Cinnamon (64-bit)?
I am running 2.6.8 on cand I've been wondering if I should post about
this. Since upgrading to 2.6.8 from the getdeb archives (from 2.6.1), my
Linux system has been unstable. I have literally pulled the plug enough
times to remind me of the Windows 3.1 days. Often there is a kind of CPU
lock out where the system gets so slow, mouse movements might take
several minutes to update, switch to tty1/console and root login to
reboot, takes several minutes between entries user/pw/reboot.
I read all the stuff about 2.6.8 dependencies on static & dynamic
libraries and the ubuntu 14.4 build and the risks of running 2.6.8 and I
would advise anyone thinking of 2.6.8 to stay on 2.6.1 on ubuntu 14.4
distros. I maybe be wrong. I also suspect Firefox because it does
strange things too which lead to instabilities/huge memory usage i.e. 16
GB/Cinnamon crashes/freezes.
I didn't particularly have trouble with 2.6.1 on Mint 17.1 Cinnamon
(64-bit) nor 17.2 during several months of light usage. I'm using the
Nvidia 304.128 driver with an Nvidia NVS 285 card, dual monitor.
Rebooting a couple times a day seems to be working tolerably for the
moment. That's very good since I just read the 2.6.8 datafiles can't be
back down to run with 2.6.1? Yikes. Can the 2.6.8 log files be played
forward from a 2.6.1 data file?

The two biggest problems have been that 1) the program runs real slow and 2) resizing the columns in the accounts is next to impossible, I have somehow hidden the Withdrawal column in the Checking Account and can't unhide it and the Description column takes up about half the width of the screen.

I have a Windows PC running the 64 bit version of Windows (8.1 and now 10) and I have had no problems with them. I installed the 2.6.9 on the Windows PC and it works great. My only problems seem to be with the Linux version of gnuCash. Is the problem the 64 bit OS or is it something else? Is there something I can do to fix this?
