I'm inclined to follow up on Colin's approach.  gnc generally yells 
loudly if you actually delete transactions.

Things to do:

Actions / Check and Repair
you should only have obvious top level accounts

Assets
Equity
Expenses
Income
Liabilities

unless you have created other top level accounts.
