Erik,

Installing Net::IDN::Encode fixed it for me also.  F::Q startup now very 
quick and both loading data file and retrieving quotes now back to 
previous times.

I'm going past on installing IO::Socket::SLL at least for the time being.

Thanks to all, especially John and Erik, who participated in this 
exercise.  Not only did I learn a lot but it was a great experience.
