If it says your email address is "illegal" you must be missing a character
such as the period or @ sign. If the error message is saying something
else, you may possibly be receiving the messages forwarded through another
service. Did you sign up via gmane, for example? If so that would explain
why you're getting the messages but are not subscribed.
Since you're using Gmail, you can easily stop seeing the messages AND still
receive them so you can read them at your leisure. There may be some way
you can do the following from your mobile device, but you can certainly do
it from a web browser on a desktop computer:
1) Open gmail in a web browser, log in, and open any message sent to the
Gnucash-User list (probably safest to pick one from another thread because
you want to be sure the message came through the list, not sent directly to
you).
2) Above the message you'll several buttons, and the right one has a
downward-pointing triangle and says "More" when you hover over it. Click
the triangle button and choose "Filter messages like this."
3) Gmail will display all matching messages and show you its search
criteria. If gmail seems to correctly find all the messages from
gnucash-user, click "Create filter with this search >>"
4a) Check "Skip the Inbox (Archive it)"
4b) Choose "Apply a Label" (and create a label to apply to the messages)
[you might alternatively apply a category, but I don't use that feature so
I'm not sure what it can and cannot do.]
4c) Check "Also apply filter to matching conversations" to remove the older
list items from your inbox.
5) Click the Create Filter button.
Now in order to see ANY messages from Gnucash-User, you will have to choose
the label in your email client; they will no longer appear in your inbox.
If you want Gmail to highlight messages that are addressed to or from you,
you might create an additional filter, or maybe Gmail's existing categories
feature will work for you.
For folks NOT using Gmail, the process for other email services and clients
is similar. However for many email services you may have to apply the
filtering in your email client. (Some email services, including Fastmail.fm
and Gmail, can filter messages on the server, independently of the mail
client, but many cannot.)
