Column Width

Actually, this is a different issue (which has also been discussed many times in the lists). Please take a look at section 2.3.3 in the Guide (http://www.gnucash.org/viewdoc.phtml?doc=guide <http://www.gnucash.org/viewdoc.phtml?doc=guide>)—specifically the note regarding the Description column.
