Just for the record, every transaction is made of two or more splits, and one can edit each split separately. The guide describes this in chapter four, I believe. I suspect you are using basic view mode, where the splits are modified for you.
You can test this in the register by opening a transaction fully, where you will see the separate splits. Either click the splits button, or select transaction journal mode, and you will see what I mean.
