Enter wipes out half of transaction

Can you describe in more detail exactly what you are doing please.  I
don't understand "When I enter both the deposit & withdraw halves of a
transaction".  Also tab and enter do not do the same thing, tab moves
to next field or split whereas enter starts a new transaction.  Note
that it is important to distinguish between splits and transactions
(if you are using splits).

Tell us exactly what you are doing at a low level, enter this value in
this field then tab and enter in this field, etc.
