QIF import fails

Hi, I am running gnucash 2.6.9-1 on a Debian Stretch distro. Am having 
trouble importing QIF files. After the import, the transactions do not 
show on my account register. When I try to re-import, all the 
transactions I try to import appear as duplicates during the import 
process, and regardless of whether I mark them as duplicates or not, 
they do not appear in the register.

I have used gnucash for years now, and have never encountered this problem.
