Beginner Issues with GNUCash

Ok so most of it seems to be working out. Dealing with the final currency
converted elements.
 
1. Is there anyway to get the import to detect the original currency and
destination currency, if different use the exchange rates?

Currently when I am importing and reconciling, it is putting the USD amount
into the reconciled GBP account, so it is not converting it at any rate.

If I go back into the transaction after import is finished, change the
transfer to a different account and then re-select it again for the same
account, it now detects the two accounts are different currencies and
prompts if to apply a currency conversion, which on import it didn't, it
assumed both accounts are in the exact same currencies.

Does GNUcash allow you to detect the accounts being selected are in
different currencies and therefore request to apply the rate on import? Or
does this feature not exist?
