Possibly tangentially related to your problems, but Ubuntu 12.04 is a very old version of Linux. That version is a Long Term Service (LTS) version of Ubuntu, and is officially supported for another year, but is 4 years out of date.

Who sold you this desktop? Perhaps they could help you upgrade to 16.04, which is the current LTS version. That would enable you to run a current version of Gnucash, with current libraries. You'd probably have to upgrade in several stages, and it wouldn't be a pretty process, but as long as you keep a backup of your /home/username/ files then you should make it through. Or, if its not too late, just wipe the disk and install 16.04 fresh.
