Outdated SSL Certificate for https://www.gnucash.org

I don't have a problem with renewing the SSl certificate, but I honestly don't get the level of fear over an expired certificate. I mean, he moment a certificate expires, you can get this message even if it was perfectly valid a minute ago. Is the difference between "perfectly safe and trusted site" and "danger! Run away!!l " really just a few ticks of the clock?
