Hi Elmar,

If you are new to double entry accounting the Wikipedia article is not a bad
introduction along with what is in the Gnucash documentation.  Also a good
intro to the history and advantages and disadvantages. Ignore the comment by
the IRS that double entry requires professional advice to use as once you
have the basic concepts, double entry is easy and makes sense and Gnucash's
implementation is easy to use..

It is biased towards business use but the basic concepts are the same for
personal accounting although account naming will be different.
