I too would like an easier way to find outstanding checks BUT that would 
be for reconciling against the bank statement. Not to see what the 
checking account balance would be (according to the bank) because THAT 
is what the account (for the checking account) in your gnucash books 
should have.

You should be entering the transactions that are checks in your books as 
of the date they were written or at least the date at which you made 
"constructive delivery" << when they legally became the property of to 
whom they were written --- here in the US, that would be when mailed >>
