My bank tells me when checks are deposited out of sequence. It shows up
as a flag on my statement. If too many show up out of sequence I get an
email letting me know about it. I never said that a bank has a problem
with an out of sequence check or won't honor out of sequence checks,
just that they watch for it. It's one small method of fraud prevention.
If your checks are currently numbered in the low 500's for example and
suddenly a check shows up numbered 1200, some banks will flag it.
They'll probably still honor the check but it will trigger some kind of
flag.

At the same time my bank also does send me reminders by email to remind
me that I'm coming up on the end of my checkbook. My last book in a set
does have a paper slip on the front of the stack to remind me but I get
a second one by email when I'm reaching the end of it.
