Expense Bar Chart Report Errors

Geert,
You mention it in passing, but I will bring out that the aggregation is sub optimal also when a subset of sub accounts are selected and aggregated at the higher level.
For example:Expenses:Auto:Fuel. $500 (selected)Expenses:Auto:Repair $1000 (omitted)
Will show:Expenses:Auto $1500
in this report. I think it should show $500.
Cheers, David

Nice catch!

I do consider this a bug. Gnucash should handle this situation more gracefully. There are several possible ways to do so though I can't analyse right now how difficult each way would be to code.

- ideally gnucash should just generate the report as requested: display the graph based on de entries in Expenses:Entertainment:Movies aggregated on Expenses:Entertainment
- if that's too complicated, it should at least return a better error message
- or prevent the user from making this combination of report settings

Michael,
I get that error as well, following your steps. The barchart report aggregates bars to a particular level in the account hierarchy, which defaults to 2 levels. If the only account you choose is at a deeper level than that, you will get this error. You can change the "Show Accounts until level" on the accounts tab of the report options.
Don't know if that qualifies as a bug or not. ..

Apologies!  I should have included that.  I'm running the latest version
(2.6.14) on Windows 10.

The program does not crash.  I get that error the the cursor remains a
circle, but it' still usable to click in GNUCash.

No report is generated.  The screen just contains the error message.

I am not sure why no one has responded, but I think that we need more
information,  What version of GnuCash are you using and what operating
 system do you have?

Does the program crash or just give an error and fail to create the report?

 Hello all,

Fairly new to GNUCash (and really enjoying it) but I'm getting an error
running a report and I'm not sure how to troubleshoot.

Within the "Income & Expense \ Expense Bar Chart" report, if I choose a
 top
level expense account, everything works.  If I choosea sub-account, I
receive "An error occurred while running the report."

 Example:

Open the Expense Bar Chart report then:

 Select:
  Expenses:Entertainment

  Result:  Everything works fine

 Select:
  Expenses:Entertainment:Movies

  Result:  Receive Error

I'm looking to see, over time, how much I spend month by month in one
 account.

I'm not sure where to find the log or how to best troubleshoot this.  I
assume this is known as it seems like a common task, but I'm not sure.

 Thanks!

 Michael
