Another way to find files on mac and pretty much any unix-like system which gives you absolute control is to open a terminal window and use the “find” command. Like most native unix commands, its format is a little obtuse but there is a pretty good command description which tells you how to use it.
>man find
…
example:
>find / -name abc.dmg will search the entire system for files named abc.dmg
>find / -name *.gnucash will search the entire system for files ending in .gnucash.
You can even set flags to look for files created in the last 5 minutes or the last 5 months, with a variety of parameters.
Usually you don’t need to go this far to find something, but when I’ve done exactly what you’ve done this little command has come in handy.
