audit recommendation - dump gnucash??

That's a pretty lame reason, in my opinion.  For one, it's not well founded -- GnuCash developers are actually pretty quick to fix actual bugs, and this list is quick to assist with user errors and issues.  And for another, the exact same comment could be made about *any* accounting software, "licensed" or otherwise.  It sounds to me like they just aren't familiar or comfortable with GnuCash and are just looking for a reason not to recommend it.  If that's the best they could come up with, I think it speaks well of GnuCash.
