I did not know that GnuCash had a report called hello world.
It sounds like your problem is actually generating reports.
Do you have any transactions in your file?

Does that happen for every report or do some simpler
reports work? I know there are a few that take a long time to
appear (Sometimes several minutes) if the data file is large.

I am using
version Gnucash 2.6.7 built on ver. df6326f+ on 2016-10-19.
My OS is Linux OpenSuSE Leap 42.2. I simply get a blank
screen where a report should be. There is nothing to export.
I am the Treasurer for a none profit and I simply want to
show the board where the money goes. The prior Treasurer
used a dbf, no reconciling, etc. I am playing catch up.
