No, you shouldn't need to change the O-B dates.  They should be fine
before Jan 1.

However, I think you're right that the "total" is eliding the opening
balance..  Which isn't surprising because that 4k opening balance didn't
occur within the period that is being totalled.  If you change the report
date to begin before your O-B date then I bet the total will be the same
as the ending balance.

I think the report isn't telling you what you think it's telling you... 
Or you're running the wrong report to tell you what you want to know.
