Thanks for the swift reply. 

Unchecking "Use Non-SWIFT transaction text" immediately resolved this in Windows. I will need to go buy something before I can check Linux (my primary gnucash system).

I found that there actually is a preference setting for this, at the bottom of the page in Preferences>Online Banking, called "Use Non-SWIFT transaction text". Uncheck it and the extra text no longer appears.
