The “backend” is the data-storage code. It comes in XML (the default) and three flavors of SQL, SQLite3, MySQL, and Postgresql.

“No suitable backend” usually means that you tried to open a book stored in SQL without having the necessary drivers installed, but it can also mean that you tried to open a file that doesn’t hold GnuCash accounts.
