[GNC] Chromebooks

1. No, once your data files are in a newer version, you can’t go lower than 2.6.19. (2.6.21 is technically the last of 2.6.x if you can find it)

Have you tried a command line install?

Open a terminal on your Chromebook and try:

sudo apt-cache showpkg gnucash

That will report the info for the gnucash package in the Debian 9 repository to which you are linked. If it says ‘Versions: 2.6.19’ or higher, you should be good to proceed. (if lower, you’ll have to build)

First, make sure any previous versions are removed:

sudo apt-get purge gnucash

When that is done, then enter:

sudo apt-get autoremove

to clean up any unneeded stuff that got installed along with those old versions. (if you need them again, the next command will re-install them)

Then:

sudo apt-get install gnucash

That should complete successfully. (be sure to reply ‘y’ to proceed even if there are additional packages listed as those are dependencies gnucash needs)

If this doesn’t work, or you still can’t open your file for some reason, report back with any error messages.

2. Building isn’t terribly difficult, but you don’t need to. Earlier in the thread I replied with this link: https://www.androidpolice.com/2018/08/19/install-linux-applications-chrome-os/

They have instructions for installing flatpak. (via command line)

From there, you can install the flatpak version which is I think currently at 3.2, but might be updated soon.
