Since I had also compiled under Ubuntu, I looked on my system to see
where it was located.  Here are my findings:
steve at stevelaptop:~$ sudo su
[sudo] password for steve:
root at stevelaptop:/home/steve# cd /usr
root at stevelaptop:/usr# find . -name libgnc-gnome.so.0
root at stevelaptop:/usr# find . -name 'libgnc-gnome.*'
./local/lib/libgnc-gnome.so

See if that is on your system.
