[GNC] crashing trying to do a simple split

Hi David,
That wasn't Mark. I was trying to duplicate what he had done first on my Linux Box and then on a Windows10 box. I didn't
close the first before opening the second and didn't reopen the register after changing the register preferences in the
first case.
