I believe the AutoSave feature has been present for many years under Edit >
Preferences > General > Files  and should be in 2.6.12.  The problem with
that is that it freezes the UI during the save, which can take more than a
minute for some combinations of data file size and locations of program,
user and data.  Twenty percent or more unavailability is not acceptable.
Worse, Auto means that it happens exactly when the quarterback has the
ball, the defensive line is breaking through, the receivers are all covered
with flypaper and the TV replay cameras are not properly aimed.

That is why I choose manually when I want my backups.
