Rick,

Try the Transaction Report. It has the ability to sort by Month.

Run the report for just one expense account to start with to get a handle on how the report options work. Then you can make it more complicated with more accounts if needed later.

If your split memos have enough detail, they will show you specific items purchased, and you can even filter on that field, for example, to see only transactions where you purchased a particular type of item like clothing or music even if you don’t have a separate expense account for them.

It is for this reason I recommend to include as much detail as possible when entering transactions. You’ll never remember it months or years later, and if you don’t enter it, there likely isn’t a way to recover it if you do want or need it. Spending habit analysis is a good example use case for more detail. I enter all of my receipts line by line in my transactions with item detail descriptions, including separate lines for sales tax. (less trouble than trying to allocate tax to each different expense account)

Another tip for more info is to turn on Double Line mode. It will expose a Note field under the description line. That can be used for transaction-wide purpose or other info and you can still put detailed purpose or item info in the individual memos.

Regards,
Adrien
