[GNC] New computer to set up gnucash and migrate from old.

I was running GC 2.6.19 on to win10 PCs.  The hard drive started to fail and the shop was able to save the files before replacing the drive and installing Win10 one the new one.  Since I have two clubs plus my own files, I've always started by double-clicking the data file which was located in a folder called qnucash where my other files for this entity was located.  Then I installed GC (I believe 3.?) and copied the file that ended with .gnucash to the appropriate folder and double clicked to start it.  Of course, I had to set GC up the way I wanted but it had all of my transactions.
Unfortunately, it wasn't until later that I discovered that the configuration files:
09/30/2018  05:04 PM    <DIR>          .
09/30/2018  05:04 PM    <DIR>          ..

Works fine for me in 2.6.21 on Windows10.

Is it too late to download the records of interest in QFX or OFX format?
GnuCash will import these formats as well.

It's not too late, but I never learned to appreciate QFX or OFX.

I use their Costco card and only get CSV and TXT (tab delimited).

With no rational explanation, over the years I have tended to favor OFX
(perhaps because it's an open standard), and QFX (I think QuickBooks'
proprietary variation on OFX, because I used to use QuickBooks?) Anyway,
QFX and OFX is what I've been importing into GnuCash for the last several
years.

But I do enjoy a good challenge now and then, so I can also understand the
desire to write a file conversion script.

Pretty much all modern operating systems (last decade or two) support
multiple users (multiple SEQUENTIAL users) and each would have his or
her own data area. Probably something like ..../users/username/
(that's the name you log in as)  So if you are doing a full data backup
for a user, that is the directory (aka "file folder") you would copy
into something like ../backups/backup20190617 on your backup drive (say
a large USB drive)

You DO make backups? On some regular basis? Yes?  << remember, it is

Perhaps a call to customer service would be to your advantage.

I've tried to figure out OFX and found it too complicated. I don't know how
to edit it.

Sorry, win 10, it appears somehow when I initially setup gnucash I named
the company and told it to store the files in a directory called LLC. I've
installed the latest version on new pc (did a comparison on new pc and it
matchs the old pc dates and sizes) . copied the LLC folder to new pc. So
how do I tell GNU to use the files in LLC folders?

That would be an ideal report and there have been many requests for it on this list over the years. (I was one of those) I think something like this is in the works and might even be available for further testing in the next release. (If I remember the thread correctly)

For now, you can use the Budget Report and simply not show the budget amounts, just show the actuals. You can even get your YTD column as the ?Totals? column if you like.

You can then export this to a spreadsheet for further manipulation and formatting as desired.

Alternatively, you can run each period separately and export to a spreadsheet and then combine them. If you choose to always show all accounts, even those with a zero balance so that the rows match, you can pull in the individual periods and have the ?master report? on its own sheet tab that simply is a set of references to the individual period reports that are in their own sheets. It would of course take some time to set up but then would be a fairly quick process after that. (you can also set up a single period on your master report with the cell references, then ?fill? across to the next 11 columns. Some spreadsheet apps are smart enough to update the relative references. Others, you simply select each column at a time and do a Find/Replace on the referenced sheet name.)

Regards,
Adrien

David,

The underlines you are referring to are called mnemonics. They are not visible by default. Once you press the activator key (`Alt` on Windows/Linux `Command` on Mac) you will see them. On Mac, I noticed the menu does not redraw while being displayed, so I had to click elsewhere to close the menu and then right-click again, and the underlines were then visible.

This is a shame because it makes them less discoverable.

Note, I don?t see any mnemonics in the main menus, probably because most of those entries have their own accelerators. (which are faster to use than opening a menu and then using a mnemonic)

Here is some more info: https://wiki.gnucash.org/wiki/GTK3#Restoring_Visible_Mnenomics

I just did a search of the Help file and I do not see any documentation on the context menu or any mnemonics.

Regards,
Adrien
