Kevin, Long

Rather than manipulate the XML data file which has a high risk of cauing
problems, I think it would be a lot easier to prepare transactions in a
spreadsheet, export it as CSV and use the CSV importer to get transactions
into GnuCash. Both Excel and LibreOffice can produce suitable files easily.

The CSV import format can handle both single and multisplit/multiline
formats although the multiline format has experienced some problems with
transactions involving multiple currencies and stock entries associated
usually with the import of price/currency conversion data expressed as a
rational number and the single line format cannot be used to import this
data at all.

The easiest way to get the data format right is to export a few transactions
of the type you want to import using the default GnuCash export format. If
you have the appropriate acount structure setup you will have to map the
account names in the import file to the internal account names on the first
occasion a transaction is made to an account.

For transactions having the minimum of two splits the data can be setup in a
single line format. Note the single line format and multiline formats cannot
be mixed in a single file.

As usual it is a good idea to experiment and get the formats right with a
few small batches of data. The importer options that work can be saved and
then used at will on data that has the same structure. This will also help
train the import matcher to assign the transfer account for the second split
if it is not specified in the data. Once you have it working satisfactorily
you can then increas the size of the batches to import.
