[GNC] gnucash question ("Acquiring lock")

It's not some optional feature that you can turn off. The "lock" is a
sentinel file, to prevent you (or multiple people) from carelessly
opening multiple copies of the same file at the same time.

But normally the lock file is created in an instant, or if one already
exists you get a failure message in an instant. The fact that your copy
is having trouble _acquiring_ the lock (checking for the lock file's
existence, or creating one) suggests to me that there is some system
problem, like a full disk drive, a read-only directory, or something
else that is doing a lot of heavy disk activity at the same time.
