Just to provide another example, my upgrade strategy on Mac OS ...

1. Download the new version.
2. Double click on the .dmg file.
2. Copy the .app file to a folder within the folder where I keep all the versions. Currently the folder contains
	Gnucash-2.6.1-1
	Gnucash-3.0-1
	Gnucash-3.4
	Gnucash-3.10
	Gnucash-4.0
	Gnucash-4.1
	Gnucash-4.1.4
	Gnucash-4.2
	Gnucash-4.4
	Gnucash-4.5
3. Start using it.

I should note however, that while I don't specifically back up the Gnucash data before upgrading, I always have three backups running of my system: an hourly backup to a local hard disk with Apple's Time Machine, a cloud backup to CrashPlan/Code42 every 15 minutes, and a daily clone with SuperDuper.

Hi Peter,

I've never actually needed the backup file but you never know :-)
