I agree that having the info available is useful; I sincerely doubt that an appendix in the Guide is the appropriate place for that info, however.

OK.  I do think that the description of the check format file in particular
should be put where it makes the most sense rather than being deleted.

Granted, not many users print checks any more, but IIRC there was a
question quite recently about that on this maillist.
