Most apps also have those items on right click menus. And double clicks are a major contributor/exacerbater of repetitive stress injuries, so I avoid them as much as possible.

Might work on Linux too for all I know. Most apps I've used default to reasonable column widths (including the somewhat dated gnucash I was using on Debian until recently).
