The fact that vast majority of transactions involve cash going in or out
is the reason that "cashbook accounting" (journal less accounting) was
invented, and why those transactions that could not be entered into a
"cashbook" were called "journal transactions".

The usual shortcut method of entering transactions in gnucash derives
directly from "cashbook accounting"<<enter directly into the ledger >>

When we enter a "split" transaction we are in effect reverting to
"journal mode" even though with gnucash the journal is virtual (there is
a report that will produce it for you). But even some simple
transactions can be "journal transactions" << no funds going in or out >>

For the benefit of folks new to gnucash, when entering a one sided split
(either the debit or the credit side has only one account) the account
to start in is THAT account << whether or not that is an account of
funds in or out >>. Much easier to enter a split transaction that way.
Adrien's advice is useful because most of the time the account with
funds going in or out will also be the side of the split with just one
account.
